The project “A Curious Herbal: Botanical Portrait Workshops” is among the recipients of the Draussen Stadt Grant from the Stiftung für Kulturelle Weiterbildung Berlin, 2022.

A Curious Herbal: Botanical Portrait Workshops

Many of the plants that we consider weeds, growing wild even within an urban ecosystem, have historically been used as medicinal plants (Heilpflanzen). The genre of botanical illustration arose out of a need to document and identify plants for medicinal and ritual purposes. During a series of hand-on workshops we will create a Curious Herbal; a documentation of the wild plants we discover growing in Berlin and their uses. The experiential nature of the workshops themselves are the heart of this project; however we do plan to culminate with a one-day exhibition of the work produced.
