An ongoing series of watercolor sketches informed by teaching on the subject of the Naturalist at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, my immediate surroundings in Berlin and imaginary landscapes. The title of the series, Pioneer Landscapes, refers to the concept of pioneer plants. Pioneer species are the first to grow in recently disturbed landscapes, flourishing in poor soil and harsh conditions. As the pioneers work the soil, they ultimately create more favorable growing conditions that lead to their own demise as they are outcompeted.
